Ugh, the students are back on campus and invading my gym. How long do New Year's resolutions last? I want my elliptical back!!
January 20, 2011 at 9:02am\

[me] This morning there was only ONE available treadmill of the kind where you can plug in your headphones and listen to the TVs (though it faces a window, so I ended up opting not to listen to any of the tv channels anyway). Classes on our campus don't even start until Monday.

I was gonna do the incline program, with a max of 6.5, but the machine was broken (all buttons non-responsive). So I did the "Random Hill" program on the adjacent machine. I bumped the max up to 8.0 because it was starting out SO SLOW. When it did get up to 8.0 I felt a little like I could fly off the machine. It adjusted speeds every 1:40, though, so it was doable. At 11:40 it started back up again, though, and I hit the Stop button. I thought about just bumping the max down to 6.5, but I didn't.
I went and told the front desk the treadmill was broken.
Then I came back upstairs and did a 15min set. At 3:33, I bumped it down to 6.5, but at 5:00 I stopped.

[~7hrs sleep] Tuesday [gym] 35min treadmill, "Performance" Program (0incline, 5.0speed)
as neared 35 and felt okay, and remembered as I always do late that I won't hit 3mi, I upped the time to 40min and then the speed to 6.0 for the last 4:30min

[~6.5hrs sleep] Wednesday [gym] ~26min weight room
I did 2 sets of 10 reps (instead of 2 sets of 8 reps) for everything.

[~7hrs sleep] Thursday [gym] 35min treadmill, Program (max: 5.0incline, 6.5speed)
"Variety" Program
40min, paused at 12:30min -- 6.0incline -- total: 1.16mi
28min @ 5.0incline -- at 12:30, just after starting 5.0incline, paused it -- total 2.31mi

I think I'm going to use the "Incline" program next week, but at 5.5mph; 5.0 feels boring, but apparently 6.0 is too high to be sustainable. (Yes, I know I could move up one-tenth of a mile at a time, but )

[~6.5hrs sleep] Friday [gym] ~25min weight room
They replaced the "rowing" machine with a Nautilus "mid row" machine, which my arms are a bit short for, so being underslept I opted to skip that one

[~6.5hrs sleep] Friday [gym] 40min treadmill, Alpine Pass Program (max: 4.0incline, 6.5speed) Total: 3.86mi
At the highest incline, the speed was 5.6 -- so, faster than I've been doing in recent weeks. It was hard, but I definitely felt like my body could do it (unlike other treadmill sessions where I've felt like my body's going to quit). At 34:15, it started slowing down in increments ... so that for the last minute or so I was jogging 3.2mph (the 2-minute official Cooldown was 3.9). When I was doing stretches of 6.2mph and 6.5mph, I reminded myself that (unlike the constant speed Interval program) the program would ease down near the end, but easing down with so much time left and easing down so far, I felt cheated out of the last fifth of my workout. (I considered manually upping the speed, esp. since I was looking forward to breaking 4mi, but I was also curious as to how low a speed it would go down to.)

At the ~34:15 decline, I started bumping it back up -- mostly to 6.5, but sometimes to 6.3 or 6.6. or 6.2 for a moment, since . The last minute or so, I was at 6.2 because the max speed is 12.5.

[~6.5hrs sleep] Wednesday [gym] 60 40:07min treadmill, Alpine Pass Program (max: 4.0incline, 6.5speed)
To avoid the slowdown issue I had on Monday, I opted to plug in a 60min program and just stop at 40min.
When we hit the second peak ~37min, it started to decrease the speed, and at first I was going to just go with it, but it didn't feel right, so I punched it up
As soon as it hit 4.0mi distance I stopped it. As I was stopping, it occurred to me that I could have kept going a bit, but given how long it took me to catch my breath once I'd stopped, I didn't feel too bad about the decision.
Vert Dist = 316

Total Distance: 4.03mi

Being better-slept definitely made it easier.

I think on Monday I'm going to do a flat-run at 6.0mph (or maybe 6.2, but maybe I'll save that for Wednesday or something so as to have a baseline)

One thing I've been noticing in recent Alpine Pass rounds is that it's difficult for me to think about much -- to do much high-level cognitive processing -- while running at this speed/intensity, which I find interesting.

I'd also started noticing the last few Interval Programs, and it remains true in Alpine Pass, that the first mile or so does actually feel harder than the rest (and once I've hit my 20min halfway point I feel much more capable of finishing, even though I'd read something (Christy Z., I swear, but then I couldn't find it on her blog) about the first mile always being the hardest, which I'd balked at because so often I feel like starting out is fairly easy and it's when I'm getting to the end that it's really hard to not just quit early.

30min @ 6.0mph = 3.00mi
tv included Real Housewives of New York City ("Fashion and Fighting"; I recognized the woman from the adds for Bethenny Ever After); largely I surfed other morning shows (incl. MTV -- Britney's live performance of "I'm A Slave 4 U" with the snake) apparently I like RHWO Atlanta better?

10min @ 5.5 = 0.91mi
20min @ 5.0 = 1.67mi

[~6.5hrs sleep -- an insomnia, I had some] Wednesday [gym] 40min treadmill, Manual Program (0incline, 6.0speed) 4.03mi
tv: first ~40min of Tabatha's Salon Takeover (Mia Bella: San Bruno, CA) [Season 3 opener]
I was (pleasantly) surprised at Tabatha saying it's fine that you're crying, go take a break to freshen up -- since usually she's all, "I hate people who cry!"
"this is sleepytime Tabatha -- do people think I wear black in my sleep?!"
also:
Today: sugar babies
Early Show: new Spiderman -- I tuned in partway through, but there seemed minimal emphasis on the race issue

[~6.5hrs sleep] Thursday [gym] ~25min weight room

[~8hrs sleep] Friday [gym] 40min treadmill, Manual Program (0incline, 6.0speed) 4.01mi

[~8hrs sleep] Thursday [gym] 40min treadmill, Manual Program (0incline, 5.0speed) 3.688mi
