Trinity was the first test of technology for a nuclear weapon. It was conducted by the United States on July 16, 1945, at a location 35 miles (56 km) southeast of Socorro, New Mexico, on what is now White Sands Missile Range, headquartered near Alamogordo. Trinity was a test of an implosion-design plutonium bomb. The Fat Man bomb, using the same conceptual design, was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, a few weeks later. The Trinity detonation was equivalent to the explosion of around 20 kilotons of TNT and is usually considered as the beginning of the Atomic Age.I learned this after reading "Dust Is Gonna Settle." Did I not learn this when we went to White Sands National Monument? I knew there was a missile range right next to the Monument -- because there were signs warning you that at at times the road would be closed. I feel like this is information I would have retained, but maybe not?
Mom (3:13 PM): Did you hear there was an earthquake in LA?
Elizabeth (3:14 PM): No, I didn't.
Mom (3:14 PM): My body panicked, natch, but George wrote
Mom (3:14 PM): A 5.8 centered near Chino Hills about 30 miles ESE of downtown which a long ways from me. I felt it but I mistook it for a kid kicking the table I was eating at first. Some buildings evacuated near here but no damage reported anywhere.
Mom (3:14 PM): Cheryl sent me a message saying "don't panic" before I even got the CNN alert :)
Elizabeth (3:15 PM): Hee.
