and that's why God invented cell phones

On my way to church this morning, I saw a dog crossing the street and felt mildly concerned but told myself its owner was probably nearby (there was also a cat nearby, and I assumed they were together).  Then it crossed the street again (partway) and a car slowed to be sure as to not hit it, and I realized its owner was definitely absent, so I went and got it and brought it to the sidewalk and held the tags of its collar in one hand and my cell phone in the other and called the number listed on its tag (well, the Home phone -- both Home and Cell were listed).  The guy who answered the phone said oh, the dog must have gotten out of the yard, and he would come get him.  So I stayed with Max (who was blessedly a well-behaved dog) for about ten minutes until the guy got there.  (He said if he'd realized how far the dog had gotten he would have driven.)
