Art Night 4

Just one piece this week. You can view it in the gallery or in this entry.

[June 24, 2010] (Art Night 4.1)

I'd been thinking about Jacob's Ladder, so I started with that. I hadn't intended to draw ground and heavens, but they sort of happened. I spent a while working with chalk pastels (and some colored pencil), really practicing blending -- getting a better feel for how these tools work.

When I'd been thinking about doing this piece, I thought about putting angels on the ladder -- my mom, Phyllis, dunno who else. But when I started working on drawing my mom, I was reminded that yeah, I am not so good at figure drawing -- and that level of detail also seemed maybe out of place in this piece -- so I shifted to attempting to demonstrate figures of light (not because I'm anti-incarnation, but to convey the idea that they are radiant with the Divine beyond our ability to fully comprehend).
