Sometimes we have happy news.

My dad has been substituting quite frequently recently. Yesterday he had a class of seniors for the long block and they had finished watching the film they were supposed to watch and were bored, so my dad let them watch TV. One kid was sitting at the computer near the door working on a project. Suddenly the room gets really quiet. The principal is in the doorway. “This is not Hat Day!” “Okay, who’s wearing a hat?” my dad asks? The kid at the computer (who had taken it off) says, “I was.” The principal leaves, the kid apologizes to my dad, says he hadn’t thought it would be a big deal. (At my high school you’re not allowed to wear hats during school hours, and apparently they’ve decided to take a Broken Windows approach.) My dad asks the class how the principal took Maury Povich on the TV, and they say they think the kid who had the remote got it off in time. My dad’s still thinking, “This is so not what I need,” though.

But then last night the woman who schedules substitutes called my dad for Thursday and Friday -- she hasn’t called him in advance since he got knocked to the bottom of the list. So yay.
