amusement from tonight

My mother read me (among other works) The Iliad when i was about 4. I’m currently reading the Robert Fagles translation. I asked my mother if she really read me the 8 pages wherein Homer lists the people on all the boats. She said probably, since the point was really the sound of her voice. I said it’s bloody long. She replied: “You didn’t have much to do when you were 4.”

Later we were talking about new shoes and how people don’t usually notice shoes called to their attention. My father said something in agreement to the not noticing. My mother pointed out that he wouldn’t notice if someone weren’t wearing clothes. “No,” he replied, “I would say, ‘You’re naked. On you, it works.’ ”
